Gaerlan II" />The author with his partner, answering the
third question on "Eat Bulaga."
In life, some things come unexpectedly. How you react to them and what you do next are what’s important. Such was the case when I became a contestant in a game segment of a popular noontime TV show.

It all started on January 5, 2006. By that time, my contractual job as a library assistant at AIM in Makati had already ended and I was looking for a new one. After reading the newspapers (particularly the classified ads section), I watched "Eat Bulaga" on TV. When the telephone number for the show’s "Kaya Mo Ba 'To" portion was flashed, out of curiosity and probably because of a long-time desire to join a quiz show, I called and gave my name and contact information to the automated voice.

The following day, someone from TAPE (the show’s production outfit), called to say that the auditions for studio contestants were to be held on Saturday, January 7. There were around twenty-four of us who auditioned. We were informed that the test would be graded not only on correct answers, but also on how the contestant reacts to time pressure. They also mentioned that we would be informed within one month if we would be accepted as contestants.

When I got home, I told my family about what transpired. All the while, I was unsure whether I would be accepted or not. "Ay matagal pa pala," was my family’s reaction when I told them I would know if I would be a contestant within a month. But that Sunday evening after Mass, I received a text message saying I was chosen as a contestant for Monday, January 9. I called TAPE and was told to wear semi-formal attire and bring a copy of my birth certificate and valid ID.

The contest itself was not what got me tense. Rather, it was waiting for almost two and a half hours that did. What eased the tension was talking to my fellow contestants. There was no real rivalry between the eight of us. Rather, we got along pretty well and agreed that the pair who would get the grand prize (or the highest) would treat everyone to lunch.

I almost thought I would not make it past the first round when my opponent gave several answers but fell short of the required number. I had a chance to advance to the next round when I provided an answer not given previously. Thankfully, it was correct and I advanced to the next round with three others.

I was paired with another contestant in the second round, where we had to guess seven words being acted out. While the other pair had their turn, my partner and I were in an isolation booth wearing earphones. With a celebrity (Julia Clarete) acting out the words for us, we were to guess seven college courses. I identified the last course (Fine Arts) correctly, which our opponents failed to do. We got all seven correct answers, our opponents got six.

At the final round, my partner and I agreed that if either of us had the correct answer, we would go with that. If not, we’d go with whose guess was closest. To win the jackpot, we had to give three correct answers out of five. I answered the first question incorrectly, but made up for it by answering the next question correctly. My partner got the third question. We needed just one more correct answer.

For the last question, my answer was Manuel Roxas, the first president of the Philippines from Region 6. We were a bit tense, as one more mistake would mean that we would not get the grand prize. But I was right. And the rest was history. We were the first "Kaya Mo Ba 'To" jackpot (PhP 500,000) winners for 2006.

We met outside after the other contestants acquired their prizes. (My partner and I could only claim our prizes at a later date due to company policy). As agreed, my partner and I treated everybody to lunch.

When I got home, calls and text messages were coming in, even from friends and relatives we hardly ever heard from. Reactions varied. My maternal grandmother in Canada believed I could win big because of my "brains." My paternal grandmother, who prayed while watching the show, said I was the most handsome among the contestants! A cousin of my Mom from Nueva Ecija commented that I should try my luck at "Starstruck" because of my looks.

What did I do with the prize? After claiming it two weeks later, I used some of it to buy a new PC for family use and donated a portion for the renovation of our parish church. The remainder went to a savings account for personal use.

As of this writing, I'm still looking for a job. Right now I am considering either a library-related job or one that involves teaching. And perhaps, join other game shows on the side.

Most Outstanding Kapampangan

by Rhea Rowena M. Quilala poses with his trophy
at the awarding ceremonies..
The Most Outstanding Kapampangan in the Field of Youth Service in the province of Pampanga for 2005 is an alumnus of the Institute of Library and Information Science. Michael N. Quilala (BLIS 2001) was conferred the award last December 11, 2005 during the celebration of the 434th Pampanga Day Celebration.

Michael—or "Mike," as he is fondly called by his friends—is a cheerful, friendly, responsible, God-fearing, and very service-oriented person. His passion for service in the community was very evident during his younger years, both in elementary and high school.

At Sto. Niño Parish School, where he obtained his grade school diploma, Michael was the Liaison Officer of the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament of the Metropolitan Cathedral Church. This ensued until his secondary school years in Pampanga High School. On top of that, Michael also held positions in the school paper, student council and various clubs.

Michael’s leadership skills are not only demonstrated in the various positions he assumed in high school, but also in his service in the community, particularly in the Rectoral Youth Ministry (a consolidation of the various youth organizations in the Metropolitan Cathedral Church) and the Vicariate Youth Ministry (a consolidation of the various parish youth ministries in the different parishes of San Fernando, Pampanga), where he held the positions of President and Vicarial Secretary, respectively. Now, he is the Vicariate President, a position he has held since 1998.

Prior to bagging the Most Outstanding Kapampangan in the Field of Youth Service Award, Michael also received the Most Outstanding Fernandino for Youth Community Service in 2003, and was one of the Most Outstanding Parish Volunteers in the Archdiocese of San Fernando in 2004.

Despite the numerous responsibilities Michael has assumed and is still assuming, he is a librarian at heart, presently working as Librarian in the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies Program on Psychological Trauma and Human Rights. He is also, in concurrent capacities, one of the web managers for Child Protection in the Philippines, and the Emergency Psychosocial Support Network.

With his commitment to inspiring the youth to make a difference in our society and participating more in the works of the Church and the community, people can expect more milestones from Michael N. Quilala, a diligent community servant... and an assiduous Filipino librarian.

Librarian Among Top 5 Volunteers

Alistair Troy Lacsamana with mascot Clifford and children
who attended a storytelling session at the last UP Fair.
A librarian was chosen recently as one of the 2005 Top 5 HSBC Faces of Volunteerism by Hands On Manila, which desires "to seek and salute those who take time out to help others without expectation or fanfare." Her commitment and dedication to her responsibilities as a teacher and as an administrator. True to her calling as a teacher, she never abandoned her students for as long as she could withstand the pains and suffering. True to the oath she took as Dean of ILIS, she was committed and dedicated to her responsibilities, notwithstanding the four long flights of steps she had to climb daily to reach the ILIS office and the fact that she just underwent chemotherapy the day before.

2. Her genuine care and concern for other people. Even before and during her illness, Vina had always shown deep and genuine concern for us, her colleagues, the staff, students and friends. She would always ask, "Kumusta ka na?" "Kaya mo na ba talaga?" "Nagpatingin ka na ba sa duktor?" I fondly remember those days when she was just learning how to drive a car. She served as our driver whenever we visited our colleague, Patc Cariño, who was also a victim of this dreadful disease.

3. Her display of charity and gratitude. Blessed with material things, she always shared these with all of us at the Institute—be these in the form of food, clothing, bags, recipe books, condiments from McCormick and others.

Her display of gratitude is exemplary. No good deeds of the students, staff, and faculty were left unrequited. There was always her gesture and words of "Thank you." There were more of these "Thank you's" during her illness, even when she could no longer utter them clearly.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uplsaa.blogspot.com/2006/04/eulogy-by-rosalie-b-faderon.html' title='Eulogy by Rosalie B. Punzalan

Assistant Professor, Institute of Library and Information Science

We all know that deciding to become a librarian is a choice that requires large amounts of devotion, passion and dedication to information service. Dean Cruz was a practicing librarian at the Main Library for many years before she decided to join the ILIS faculty. And this makes her special. It is as if librarianship is not enough service that she devoted her most productive years to teaching the future of our profession.

Ma'am Vina was a professor who strictly checked attendance and tardiness. And her classes were normally held in the morning. If she's your program adviser she will never allow you to enlist without completing your INC's or remove your 4's. I remember her telling me that there is wisdom behind every university rule and following them is our contribution towards ensuring the quality of our graduates.

Ma'am Vina may be strict, but she was also kind and humane. She knew when to observe the rules and when to apply certain exceptions. I remember one time when I came to class late and sneaked in a bottle of Coke. Of course she called my attention. With my rebellious and sometimes impertinent nature, I answered back. I said, "Ma'am please 'wag nyo na akong sermonan ng ganito kaaga, hindi pa nga ako nag-aalmusal at Coke lang ang nakayanan ko." And she replied, smiling, "Very well, finish your drink and proceed with the class exercise." She taught me that the best response to aggression is kindness.

My lowest grade ever in any of my LIS subjects, I received from Ma'am Vina. Yet, she convinced me that I could be a productive member of the ILIS faculty. As a senior colleague and boss at the Institute, she had a tireless mentoring spirit, especially when it comes to university rules and procedures and how I should relate with my students and colleagues. Most of all, she was a friend and a mother who showed genuine concern and appreciation of what I can do. Despite our age gap, I feel comfortable to be with her. She gave me numerous advice, including those bordering on personal concerns such as how I could manage my finances more responsibly.

When I heard about her sickness about three years ago, I opened up to her and expressed my fear of what might happen to her. She said why should I be worried when she herself is not at all afraid of what God had in store for her.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uplsaa.blogspot.com/2006/04/eulogy-by-ricardo-l-punzalan.html' title='Eulogy by Ricardo L. I remember that I was at the National Kidney Institute for my mother’s check-up when VP Gregorio called me to say Dean Divina has submitted a nomination for me. VP Mart actually said, "Sikat ka na, na-nominate ka ng pinakamalaking kolehiyo sa UP Diliman!"

Secondly, at a time when I was unsure about accepting the nomination, Vina, as was her usual practice, would send me encouragements and assurances of support and prayers! I remember that Vina sent me a verse from the Old Testament, from Jeremiah 29:11—"'For I know the plans I have for you,' says the Lord; plans of welfare and not of calamity, to give you an expected end."

So I would like to publicly acknowledge Vina’s role in my decision to accept the nomination for Chancellorship.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uplsaa.blogspot.com/2006/04/eulogy-by-sergio-s-cao.html' title='Eulogy by Sergio S. There, I got to know a little bit of her kindness, especially to us her students.

She was so understanding and tolerant to working students like me, who are always in a hurry. She’s always there to give us guidance and assistance. She was not just a teacher at that time, she was more of a mother to us. I truly admire her as a mother when I see her and her family at Mass on Sundays.

Just recently, I had a more personal and intimate time with Dean Cruz when she accepted our invitation for the Alumni Homecoming.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uplsaa.blogspot.com/2006/04/eulogy-by-marie-grace-b-perez.html' title='Eulogy by Marie Grace B. And yet, somehow, there is a sense in which we will not miss her too much, a part of her will always be with us.

She was a very special person—God’s gift to her own family, to our family, and to the UP family, especially her students, fellow faculty and staff at the UP ILIS. She is leaving a priceless legacy.

To her mother, brothers and sisters, she showed uncompromising strength of character. She stood up for what she knew was right, believing that strong relationships could only grow when they are founded on principles. She demonstrated a clear sense of fairness, and she never rested until she was sure everybody in the family got their fair share of blessing or received just treatment.

To our family, Vina was our pillar of compassion. But the term "soft hearted" is hardly appropriate because she actually had a strong heart when it came to caring for people. When we were given the privilege to help raise children besides our own, Vina cared for them as if they were part of the family. Our daughters have grown up to be responsible and independent in their own ways because they were nurtured and guided by their loving mother.

To faculty, staff and her students at the University of the Philippines, especially at the Institute of Library and Information Science, she was the picture of endless passion for teaching and administering the Institute. If she had her way, she would still be holding classes even on her sickbed! You who know her will agree with me that she was fiercely committed to excellence.

We are all richer today because Vina has left this invaluable legacy in our lives. In a sense, though she has gone ahead of us, she hasn’t really left us. She continues to live in our hearts.

Before I close, allow me to thank all of you who have shown us your love through many different acts of kindness. You have given us your time, visiting Vina and encouraging her with emotional support, especially in the past several months. Some have given financial resources, and many times with much sacrifice. Your generosity will never be forgotten.

Most of all, you have prayed for us, and our gracious Heavenly Father has answered your prayers. He has given us comfort and peace, and the assurance of His presence to guide us through life without our dearest Vina beside us.

The Bible declares our God is a loving God, a just God. He gives, and He also takes away. All in His own time. But if God were to give Vina another life to live, I have no doubt she would live it exactly the same way—giving her all, without any thought of receiving in return.

Outstanding Librarians from ILS, 1994-2005

The Professional Regulation Commission began conferring the Outstanding Professional Librarian of the Year Award in 1994. Pineda

At its 1,162nd meeting on August 29, 2002, the Board of Regents approved the change of name of the Institute of Library Science (ILS) into the Institute of Library and Information Science or ILIS.

LIS is now the accepted nomenclature for the field in other parts of the world and it coincides with the 1995 University Council's approved titles for the Institute’s new course offerings, which is Library and Information Science.

Dr. Josephine Sison, ILIS dean, authored a concept paper on upgrading the ILS into a college and submitted it to the University Administration in 1999.

However, despite the endorsement from former Chancellor Claro T. Llaguno, the UP Presidential Advisory Council deferred action on the proposal due to the limited number of students entering the Institute and ILS’ insufficient academic programs.

"Nakalusot ito sa Executive Committee, but when it was presented to the Presidential Advisory Council, sabi nila maliit pa ang ILS. He won 500,000 PHP (approximately 9,500 USD) along with his partner just this afternoon on "Eat Bulaga!" Aldric (BLIS 2004; left in both photos) and his partner answered 3 questions correctly:
What profession is denoted by the initials DVM?
Which Oscar-winning actor is related to Abraham Lincoln?
Which Filipino president was from Region 6?
The answers: Veterinarian, Tom Hanks, and Manuel Roxas.
But no, we didn't know that Gaerlan was even going to be on the show. I was having lunch with librarians at UP's Institute of Library and Information Science, when Grace Tabiendo wondered aloud when a librarian would ever become a contestant on a game show. She was, apparently, one of the few paying attention to the TV in the room. A few moments later, Gaerlan told the show's host that he was a librarian. It was only then that those in the room—who had been his teachers and fellow students—recognized him. No one left the room after that. The group was welcomed by Evangelina R. Africa, principal of Jaen West Elementary School (population: 500 students), and a group of concerned teachers. A lecture and demonstration on organizing and processing printed materials were handled by Brine Alejandrino, Marian Ramos and Christine Manglal-lan.

UPLSAA became involved in this project when Alicia G. Infante, a Jaen teacher, requested Corazon Gamboa, her sister-in-law, for assistance in setting up a library for their school. The Board decided it was a worthy project and launched a drive to solicit books and library materials for the implementation of the program. Luckily, Rogelio B. Mallillin, alumnus and executive director of the Philippine Library Materials Project, offered three boxes of good quality reading materials for children.

On May 28, 2005, the second batch of donated books was delivered to the school through the leadership of current president Cristy Samson. The generous donor this time was the Miriam Grade School Library, represented by Edes Vijandre, an alumna, and Ofel Amores. A total of 553 volumes of interesting reading materials and textbooks in English and Filipino from Grades 1 to 7 was accepted by the ever-gracious principal, who treated us to sumptuous snacks and lunch, plus mangoes to take home.

The experience brought home the reality of the deteriorating quality of public elementary school education in the country. It is sad that despite the abundance of computers in private schools, many children still do not have good books to read. Let us join hands in reaching our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Donate a book now! Divina Pascua-Cruz, College Secretary Grace Gonzales, Prof. Rosalie Faderon, former deans Rosa Vallejo and Ursula Pichache, jubilarians, friends, colleagues and fellow alumni. I thank you for making this day special, for electing me as your 55th president and for taking time out from your busy schedules to be with your fellow alumni.

Being an officer in the Association some years back, I felt the need to contribute and give back to the organization founded by the great men and women of the Institute of Library and Information Science. As a recognized profession, librarianship in the 21st century goes beyond deskwork. Librarians are expected to perform multiple tasks and lead in all areas of information. Our roles as information managers and disseminators are the key factors in building progress in our society. Bear in mind that while methods may change or become outdated, our duty remains the same.

Allow me to present my agenda for this year. We may be constrained to accomplish more because of the forthcoming CONSAL 2006, in which we are all expected to participate. However, we will do our best as a team, utilizing the expertise of the new set of officers and with the able support of the Institute, and of course you fellow alumni.

Updating the alumni directory

There is a need to publish a new directory of alumni to be able to reach out and disseminate information. We need your email addresses so we can send the newsletter via the Internet to minimize the cost of mailing that is eating up our resources.

Membership campaign

We would like to appeal to our fellow alumni to renew their memberships or become lifetime members.

A permanent website for the UPLSAA

This I will try to work out with my colleagues and with the new board.

Outreach program to libraries and librarians in the provinces

We have initiated a book donation program to a public elementary school in Jaen West Elementary School in Nueva Ecija. We will do more this year.

Alumni Relations Office

We will try to revive the Alumni Office at the Institute, where we can meet and conduct business with our alumni and friends.

Other ways to generate funds

It is my ardent desire to contribute in enhancing our resources for the welfare of the Association.

With these as my guide, and with your confidence, I appeal to all of you to help me achieve these goals. Your support for all the Association’s endeavors and activities will be your best contribution in making us the best Alumni Association; while being anything at all can be brought about by accidents beyond our control, being the best is by no means accidental. Apart from being the best as the ideal state, then it is also a choice, the choice to be the best, and to effectively make that choice is one step to being the best.

May we in our own little way continue to be an inspiration to the library profession and to the future generation of librarians.

Thank you and good day!

Treasurer's Report

Click on image to view Financial Report.
The financial report (as of 17 May 2005) prepared by Marian Ramos, UPLSAA Treasurer for 2004-2005, may now be viewed online. R.A. 9246 was enacted on April 27, 2004. Subsequently, public forums were organized in coordination with the Professional Regulation Commission Board for Librarians (BFL) by different organizations to help the present BFL disseminate information regarding the new law. The UPLSAA was one of the library organizations that conducted a forum held at the U.P. College of Engineering Theater on June 16, 2004.

Ms. Perla T. Garcia and Ms. Elizabeth R. Peralejo, BFL chairperson and board member, respectively, participated in the aforementioned forum.

The annual book fair celebration that continues to attract crowds of bookworms and avid readers was the venue of the second forum organized by the UPLSAA. The forum, “Media Technology: Effective Utilization in Teaching,” was held during the Manila International Book Fair at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on August 12, 2004. Guest speaker was Ms. Peralejo, who graciously shared her expertise on the proper use and advantages of media equipment in teaching.

The two forums would not have been possible without the support from generous sponsors. Thus, the board expressed its gratitude towards them in the 60th issue of the UPLSAA newsletter.

Trainings

The UPSLAA successfully organized two important training seminars. The first was a two-day seminar entitled “Challenging Librarians: the New Roles of Professional and Support Staff in the Digital Environment,” held at the Fernando Hall, Ateneo de Naga University, on October 18-19, 2004.

The seminar was in partnership with the Bikol Consortium of Librarians of Academic and Research Librarians (BiCLARL). It served as an outreach program for librarians in the provinces, specifically those coming from the Bikol region. Seminar kits, courtesy of generous benefactors, were distributed to the participants. BiCLARL and faculty members from the Ateneo de Naga University were gracious hosts to the occasion.

The UPLSAA also tapped the U.P. College of Science Library for a seminar-workshop entitled “Creating your Web Page Using HTML” held on March 29-31, 2005. Mr. Ramon Sampang, one of the IT officers of the U.P. College of Science, generously shared his expertise on creating web pages.

Outreach Program

One of the most fulfilling undertakings of the UPLSAA was its contribution in the setting up of a library in Jaen West Elementary School in Dampulan, Jaen, Nueva Ecija. The Association donated children’s books, journals, and other essential library materials, such us book cards and date due slips, and brought them to the school last February 27, 2005. These donations served as the school library’s initial collection.

The board has agreed to further assist Jaen West Elementary in the setting-up of their library. In this regard, the Association continues to solicit children’s books and other reference materials to beef up the school’s collection. The Association would also appreciate the rendering of cataloging services for a systematic arrangement of library resources.

Membership

The board has come up with a partial list of lifetime members. With this list, the current board decided to issue free IDs to lifetime members. This ID shall be used in future activities of the Association. In time, the board shall come up with special privileges that would be available only to lifetime ID holders.

Newsletter

The Association’s newsletter is published quarterly. However, due to limited resources (printing and postage costs have increased considerably), the board decided to publish two issues this year instead of the usual four issues.

UPLSAA’s Nominee for UPAA’s Most Outstanding Professional

This year, Prof. Rosalie Faderon is UPLSAA’s nominee for the UPAA’s Most Outstanding professional in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). The Association recognizes Prof. Faderon’s unwavering love and passion for the profession. She has proven her worth as a LIS professor over the years with her tireless advocacy to lift up the library and information science profession in the country.

Fundraising Activity

The Association came up with a fundraising project by way of a film showing at the U.P. Film Institute. National Treasure, which stars Nicolas Cage, was shown on February 16, 2005. Though projected profits were not met, the occasion served as a get-together venue for UPLSAA members.

With the country’s current fiscal crisis, generating funds was a daunting task for the Association. But it was fortunate that generous organizations and colleagues were always around to offer financial and moral support in the conduct of trainings, seminars, and the like. Funds may not have been enough to finance the Association’s other projects, but the accomplishments—partnerships with other organizations and the work on providing colleagues with the current information trends in the field of library science—have been a fulfilling experience to everyone. With these humble achievements, the objectives of the Association have been achieved thus far.

UPLSAA’s incumbent board deserves a tap on their backs for their concerted efforts and leadership in achieving these objectives. It is hoped that the succeeding boards will strive and continue to come up with relevant projects in the future.

ILIS Lecture Series

Using the Extensive MarkUP Language (XML)
to Represent the Accounting and Acquisition
Library Processes

Jason Alcarez

Institute of Library and Information Science
University of the Philippines Diliman
Wednesday, 11 May 2005, 9am-12nn

Mr. Alcarez won the best undergraduate thesis award in 2004. Faderon on 23 April 2005.

Dean Ma. Divina Pascua-Cruz, former Deans Ursula G. Picache and Rosa M. Vallejo, colleagues in the Institute of Library and Information Science, Mrs. Ma. Cristina Samson and other officers of the UPLSAA, fellow alumni, ladies and gentlemen:

Good Afternoon! Since you invited me as your speaker today and I accepted it, let me tell you that I accepted the concomitant privilege of requesting a favor from you. Would you please greet your seatmates on your right, on your left, in front of you and at your back? From here, I can see you greeting each other but I don’t hear the words you say. For those whose responses you did not hear, what do you think did they say? Let me guess what most of you said: “Fine,” “Okay,” “Mabuti,” “Beauty pa rin.” Is my guess correct? How nice of you to be so participative and cooperative! I am psyching up myself to make my task of delivering an inspirational message easy.

Invariably, you and I, or man, in general, have experienced goodness in our lives. Remember how excited you were when you passed the UPCAT or when you were admitted to the BLIS/MLIS program? Remember how grateful you were when you finished your thesis? How you felt when you were informed that you were graduating with honors? Remember how excited you were at your first job? What boundless joy your parents or you experienced upon seeing and having a newborn child! If you are married, call to heart how you felt during your wedding day. If you are in a relationship, remember how he proposed love to you and how you accepted him. Wow! Would you have wished for eternity! Remember the perfect and complete happiness in the Garden of Eden before the fall of Adam and Eve?

Indeed, when goodness is in you or around you, you experience harmony, peace and joy. You feel strong! You like to share it with someone. Oh, how nice it is to multiply goodness to mitigate the problems of the world!

I urge you, therefore, to be good always. If you don’t believe you are, just do it. Take inspiration from the good thief on Good Friday. Do you remember what he said? On the cross, he said, “Remember me, Lord, when You are in Paradise.” And Jesus replied, “This day, you will be with me in paradise.” Someone said he stole heaven but the truth is, Jesus gladly gave it to him.

In this world of ours, we often are attracted to do the less good. It is not easy to choose from the colors of the rainbow; much less, from the options of black and white. Do you remember how it was like to decide to study at UP? Or how it was to make up your mind to take up library and information science? While studying at UP, did you ever think of quitting? Did you entertain the thought of transferring to another school? Put it in another way, we are saying that life is a struggle. It would be the same as you enter the world of work, the area of graduate studies or the realm of building your own family. I am confident that your education in UP has equipped you with the basic knowledge, skills and tools to come out as victors in the struggles yet to come.

Let me invite you though to consider seriously what St. Paul wrote to the Romans, and I paraphrase him:

For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate. If what I hate is good, and I do not do it, but instead do unwillingly what is bad, then I am not in control of myself.
It sounds like there is an identity crisis. More than that, there is a struggle and someone loses. If this happens to you, take heed of Pope John Paul II’s exhortation, “Be not afraid.” Rejoice, for there is immeasurable goodness in our society and culture. You realize how much connected you are to your friends. You belong to a family; you belong to a church! You are part of the Filipino culture of mutuality of love and care! There are immutable, as well as adaptive/changing principles, that govern membership in these groups. Discover them and live them out!

To be good is exacting, demanding of sacrifice, patience, perseverance, faith, hope and charity. But you have to reason, believe and trust in goodness. Remember some of our beloved personalities: Mother Teresa who is known for her sacrifice, love and charity; Pope John Paul II, for his sacrifice, faith, and love; Ninoy Aquino, for his faith and love for the Filipinos; St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, for her patience, faith and love; and one of our heroes, Jose Rizal, for his love of country. These are some of the men and women who knew their purpose in life. Therefore, search for and live out your identity!

Finally, always and never stop to ask who you are in the profession. There is a place for improvement at any time. Live out who you are! There’s a voice within you; listen to it. Listen also to the message around you. Let me ask you: what does a job vacancy in the UP Library, in ADB Library, or in a municipal library tell you? What can you contribute to uplift our condition in the country, particularly the incidence of poverty and unemployment? Indeed, you have to listen to the message about creation, about life—from what you see: the sky, the moon and the stars, the flora and the fauna; from what you feel and smell: the soothing breeze, the fragrant smell of flowers; and the music sung by the birds. These are wonderful gifts of love!

Thank you. Have a nice day!

Responses

Click on photos to view larger image.
Several responses were delivered at the homecoming: Iyra Buenrostro for the BLIS graduates, Richard Taduran (photo removed upon request) for the MLIS graduates, Lourdes Depita for the silver jubilarians, and Jacinta Yatco-Ingles for the golden jubilarians. (Iyra Buenrostro's photo courtesy of Susan Torres.)

The response below is the one delivered by Richard Taduran.

For one to progress, one must have a foundation that is strong, durable and reliable. So I guess building progress is like building a monument, since having a shaky, unstable foundation will never make a monument stand the test of time.

Building progress in the LIS profession can be established with a well-defined philosophy. Philosophy, after all, is one of the most important foundations of any profession. A well-defined philosophy equates to a stable framework of any profession.

So I guess, this time, progressing forward means looking backwards—looking back to the forgotten essence, forgotten glory and forgotten legacy of LIS. And in the 21st century, UPLSAA and the rest of the Philippine LIS community, still has 95 years to go to really build progress in our profession.

Let us all unite and build a strong and stable LIS monument!

Officers

Click on photo to view larger image.
Dean Pascua-Cruz (in pink) swears in the incoming UPLSAA officers, from left: Merlyn Sornoza, Rhea Ubana, Cristy Samson, Florie Valdez, Christine Timoteo, Cora Gamboa, Grace Tabiendo, Von Totanes.
